Sometimes a deal is so good, you just have to buy it (we know it well… it’s a professional hazard of working in the deal business).

But sometimes a deal is even better, and you have to share it.

We’ve made it easy to do just that with our handy new ‘send to a friend’ button next to all the deals on city-treats.com.

Cool? Yeah we thought so…

But that’s not all.

You’ll have noticed another wee new button next to this one, labelled ’show on map’.

Want to take a guess at what this does?

Correct. Look…

Enjoy…

We asked you what you thought about ‘best before’ dates… do you take any notice of them?

The response was great (thank you to the 190 responders) and the results were interesting! (thank you again).

First, you’re definitely clued-up. We asked you whether you know the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates. 96% say you do.

So you probably already know this but the definitive answer is:

“You will see ‘use by’ dates on food that goes off quickly, such as meat products and ready-prepared salads. Basically, a lot of the products you find in chilled cabinets in the supermarket.

Don’t use any food or drink after the end of the ‘use by’ date on the label, even if it looks and smells fine. Using it after this date could put your health at risk.

The ‘best before’ dates are more about quality than safety. When the date runs out it doesn’t mean that the food will be harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture.” Source: food.gov.uk

Next, we asked whether you would eat food that had gone beyond its best before date. The answer: a resounding yes!

How long after? Just a couple of days or would you still be happy to eat it months later? Here’s what you said:

Finally, just over two thirds of you said you would be interested in a site selling food at a discount if it was past its best before date. We were particularly interested in this as we’ve been considering adding deals from a site that does just that.

Approved Food has a great range of grocery goods, all discounted (some but not all past their BB date). We think it’s great, so look out for some of their best offers appearing on a City Treats page near you!

We’ve been working on it for a while… so we’re delighted to announce the launch of a complete revamp of City Treats, as you see it when you visit on your mobile.

Before, here’s how our city pages would look on your mobile:

A thing of beauty, to be sure ;-) … But as a designer friend of ours once wisely said, ‘your finger isn’t as pointy as a cursor’. Bigger images and pictures were needed…

So goodbye fiddly phone tapping, and hello to your new big-buttoned City Treats mobile site. Enjoy!

CT Towers No Comments

City Treats flew to Zagreb last month for the first annual CT Summit. We went to have a meeting with Nick, our developer.

We were taken to a small village in the South of Croatia, where we ate like Kings:

All the food was homegrown and prepared totally fresh. Our welcome lunch was the one on the right, which was cooked outside, with fresh meat (which had been reared on a nearby farm) and homegrown veg.

Far cry from London where we grab our lunches from our nearest supermarket. Made us want to move out of the city!

We visited vineyards, went wine tasting, met Nick’s family and friends and generally had an all round incredible time. Oh and we had a couple of work meetings too where we discussed the next big CT changes… exciting things are coming!

It snowed on the drive to the airport. So much that we thought our flight would be cancelled. As the blizzards wailed and thumped on the plane metal, we turned to each other:

‘If our plane’s cancelled, shall we just book a hotel in Zagreb for a night? Or go back to Nick’s, if he’ll have us?” I said.

“Sure. Wouldn’t be such a bad thing, would it?”

We silently cursed as the plane whooshed up the runway.

Back home it was…
